Hi, I'm Coach Claudia
A Trailblazer in Gymnastics and Beyond
Claudia Magalhaes Carmo, born Claudia de Paula Magalhaes Costa on January 27, 1962, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a pioneering figure in Brazilian gymnastics and a multifaceted professional whose legacy spans athletics, coaching, and entrepreneurship. Known as Claudia Costa in her competitive years, she began her gymnastics journey at age 12 at University Gama Filho in Rio de Janeiro, setting the stage for a remarkable career that would inspire generations.
Claudia made history as the first Brazilian Gymnast to compete in the Olympic Games, representing her country at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Her international career was distinguished, with appearances at four Gymnastics World Championships (Strasbourg 1978, Fort Worth 1979, Moscow 1981, and Budapest 1983) and two Pan American Games: Puerto Rico 1979 and Caracas 1983, (where she earned a Bronze medal first time for Brazilian Team). She also claimed Gold at both the South American Championships, in Santiago, Chile (1981) and Rosario, Argentina (1982). Domestically, Claudia dominated as an eight-time Brazilian National Champion from 1977 to 1984, excelling in floor exercise, balance beam, vault, uneven bars, all-around, and Team competitions.
After earning a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from University Gama Filho, in 1983 in Rio de Janeiro Brazil, Claudia transitioned into coaching. As the Brazilian Junior National Coach, she led the young National Team to a Bronze medal at the 1988 Junior Pan American Games, in Puerto Rico.
She got married in 1986 to her teen-sweetheart husband, Aureliano Carmo, and has been walking hand-in-hand with him, guided by God's grace and love, for more than 5 decades!
Coach Carmo, was the Brazilian Olympic coach for the Brazilian Men’s Gymnast at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. The couple relocated to the United States, invited to work in New Jersey at the end of 1988, where a couple years later Claudia & Aureliano became co-owners, and served as head coaches of the Girls & Boys Team at US-Gym.
Under their leadership, their teams secured over 100 state, regional, and national titles, cementing their reputation as exceptional coaches.
Claudia, a devoted mother to her three sons — Phillip, Peter, and Patrick — could balance family life with a dynamic career. She ventured into real estate, achieving remarkable success as a record-breaking sales agent since 2002 at Rosa Agency, Weichert, and RE/Max, in NJ. Now she's a licensed Realtor in Texas with eXp Realty.
In 2016, Claudia was honored by the Brazilian Olympic Committee to carry the Olympic Torch during the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, a testament to her enduring impact on Brazilian sports. In 2020, Claudia and her family moved to Sugar Land, Texas, where she continues to thrive as an entrepreneur. She owns Carmo Enterprises, a real estate investment business, and Royal Gymnastics, a mobile Gymnastics school dedicated to nurturing young talent aged 2 to 10. Claudia Carmo’s journey — from Olympic trailblazer to celebrated coach and businesswoman — reflects her unwavering dedication, resilience, and passion for empowering others.
